How to choose a bouldering gym
The best gym is the one you actually go to regularly. These points decide that:
- Travel time and opening hours: A gym 15 minutes from home beats a bigger one an hour away. Some gyms open early: Boulderwelt München Ost opens at 6 am on weekdays.
- Space and choice: More space means more problems per grade and less crowding in the evening.
- Kids' area: If you bring children, a separate area with low walls is worth a lot. Blockhelden (about 750 m²) and Boulderwelt Regensburg (over 300 m²) are strong here.
- Training area: If you want to build strength in a targeted way, look for training boards and a strength room. der steinbock Nürnberg, for example, has a Kilter Board.
- Rope and bouldering under one roof: If you want to do both, the DAV centres in Thalkirchen and Bad Tölz are the simplest option. We explain the difference in Climbing Gym vs. Bouldering Gym.
- Passes for several locations: According to the operator, a membership at the DAV centre in Bad Tölz also covers Thalkirchen, Freimann and Gilching. Blockhelden offers memberships valid at all its locations, and der steinbock sells combination passes for Nuremberg, Erlangen and Zirndorf/Fürth.

Your first visit
- Rent shoes: Don't buy your own right away. Many gyms rent them out, including Bloc-Hütte and Boulderwelt Regensburg. If you stick with it, our guide to climbing shoes for beginners will help.
- Read the house rules: Every gym has them. Read them before you get on the wall.
- Warm up: A thorough warm-up is the first of the DAV's five rules for safe indoor bouldering.
- Climb down instead of jumping: Downclimb when you can. If you have to jump, land with your feet together and roll.
- Keep the fall zone clear: Never stand under someone who is bouldering, and leave nothing on the mats.
FAQ
Do I need my own gear for bouldering?
No. Sportswear and rental shoes from the gym are enough to start. Your own shoes are worth it once you go regularly. You don't need a harness, rope or belay device for bouldering.
Which bouldering gym in Bavaria is the largest?
Among the pure bouldering gyms on our list, it's Blockhelden in Bubenreuth near Erlangen, with around 3,500 m² of bouldering space. The DAV centre in Thalkirchen, Munich, is even larger at around 7,000 m², but it combines rope climbing and bouldering.
How dangerous is bouldering?
Bouldering is not risk-free. In the DAV's 2025 climbing gym accident statistics, 174 of 252 recorded accidents happened while bouldering, and almost 9 in 10 of those were falls onto the mat. Rolled ankles and similar twisting injuries were the most common outcome. Downclimbing and a moderate jump height reduce the risk.
From what age can children boulder?
Each gym sets this in its house rules. The DAV stresses that the mat is not a playground and that adults must actively supervise children. Gyms with a separate kids' area, such as Blockhelden, Boulderwelt Regensburg or der steinbock Nürnberg, are the more relaxed choice for families.
Where can I find bouldering gyms in other states?
Every gym in Germany is listed in our gym directory. There's a separate guide for North Rhine-Westphalia: The Best Bouldering Gyms in NRW.
Bottom line
If you live in Munich, location decides: Ost, West, Süd, einstein or Thalkirchen. If you also want to rope climb, pick Thalkirchen or Bad Tölz. In Franconia, Blockhelden offers the most space and der steinbock Nürnberg a lot for training. Augsburg, Regensburg and Passau each have a solid gym for every level.
